Job Coaching

Available to regional Middle Schools, High Schools, and Intermediate Units

SUPPORT AND EVALUATION

Job Coaching VSpecial Education classes from regional school districts and intermediate units are welcome to utilize the Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association for their job coaching and development programming.  Classes will typically come to CATRA for a few hours each week, however frequency and length can be varied to the needs of your students and class.

School personnel must attend and supervise students while participating at CATRA.  CATRA volunteer staff will be on hand to answer any questions and support completion of tasks.

All work will take place outside or in one of our barns. Dress appropriately. Students will get dirty. We have a wide variety of animals; They will also come into contact with hay, dust, and dander.

SERVICE LEARNING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

“Civic engagement means to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community…”     [Thomas Ehrlich:  American Council on Education]

EMBRACE DIVERSITY AND IMPROVE ALTRUISM

Work GroupCATRA’s service-learning opportunities involve students in organized community service that addresses civic responsibility and commitment to the community while developing academic skills. Further, participation in the field experience facilitates opportunities for students to embrace diversity and improve altruism. Improved self-concept and self esteem are also frequently identified.

In addition to other benefits, the acceptance of diversity and improvement of altruism have also been shown to have a significantly positive impact combating bullying and associated behaviors.

AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

CATRA’s Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Field Experience is available to student groups throughout the year. Program length is tailored to specific classroom needs and may range from a few hours to a half-day or more.

Student groups are welcome to participate in the program on multiple occasions and often find enhanced educational opportunities with each new visit. For “first-timers” participating in the program, the initial 20 minutes or more will be a CATRA classroom orientation consisting of history, mission, frequently asked questions, and safety protocols. Afterward students will participate in hand-on activities appropriate to their age and abilities.

ONGOING ENGAGEMENT

In many instances, students participating in the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Field Experience will return (often with friends and relatives) to become full-fledged CATRA volunteers.

INTERNSHIP

This CATRA program assists high school students in their discovery of career paths and choices within a wide variety of agricultural and human services options. Students work alongside program professionals for a few hours, a day, or even more while learning the many and varied aspects of careers associated with social services, animal-assisted therapy, non-profit management, and/or equine studies.

This program serves as an excellent trial for students who may be unclear or unsure about their desired career or course of study. It allows for an opportunity to try out a career for a day while assessing personal interest and ability.

Student interns are encouraged to continue their learning through attendance at any of CATRA’s monthly complimentary educational programs.
